Q: What is ADSL?
A: ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is a technology that allows normal copper
telephone wires (sometimes known as a twisted pair) to provide a Broadband service.
Q: What is broadband?
A: Broadband is a generic term meaning that the connection referred to has the capacity to transmit
large amounts of data at a high speed. When connected to the internet, this allows information to be
transferred much faster than a conventional modem or narrowband connection.
Q: Will there be a product for home use and business use?

A: Yes, there are two types of ADSL Services:

This is suitable for home use and SOHOs
This is suitable for corporations and medium-sized businesses.

Q: will I have to buy a separate ASDL modem or router?
A: Yes. For single computer connections, a modem is needed. For multiple computer connections, a router is needed.
But AvirTel presents DSL Modem free of charge for any speed type.
Q: What sort of connection does my computer need?
A: With the modem, you need a USB Port and with the router, you will need an Ethernet Port.
Q: What is the minimum specification for my computer?
A: It is recommended that your computer have at least a Pentium 3 processor and 128 megs of RAM.
Q: is distance a problem?
A: Yes. The service can only be given to customers within a 7km radius of the Telecoms exchange.
Q: what is contention ratio?
A: Bandwidth across the AvirTel Network is shared amongst users. The degree of sharing is called the contention ratio. ASDL contention ratio is ….
Q: Do I have to have a new line for this service?
A: No. ADSL will run on top of your existing telephone line, which will continue to be billed as normal.
A separate broadband connection and rental charge will apply for the extra equipment we require to provide the service.
Q: Will my normal telephone work as usual?
A: Yes, ADSL runs ‘on top’ of your normal telephone, so you can make voice calls and send faxes as usual at the same time as surfing the internet.
Q: Is Broadband better than ISDN?
A: Not necessarily. Broadband can run faster than ISDN, but it is shared, whereas ISDN is a point to point dial-up connection with a constant speed. Generally, ISDN has a smaller bandwidth, whilst ADSL has a larger bandwidth and offers higher picture resolution. Thus one can send things faster with ADSL than ISDN but the usage depends on the volume of data transfer generally required.
Q: What about security?
A: To get announced to the internet, you must log on using your user name and password. However, once you are connected you are effectively available to the world – even if you have a dynamic IP address. You are thus encouraged to install a firewall.
Q: What should I do to have ADSL now?

A: Call AvirTel.
